Charlestown is the oldest neighborhood in Boston; it was originally laid out in 1629 in the reign of Charles I of England and it was the first capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Charlestown is also very well known for being where Paul Revere began his famous midnight ride before the battle of Lexington in the American Revolution. Other historical points in Charlestown are the Bunker Hill Monument, which marks the first major battle of the American Revolution, and the USS Constitution, which is docked in the Charlestown navy yard and is the oldest warship in the world still afloat.
